Hey, while we're at it, why don't we shed a tear for the working poor who get disproportionate injustice and punishment from the prison system? Or for women who still get paid disgustingly less than men for the same job? Can't we find any 10-year olds who won't say the pledge of allegiance until this issue is brought up? I'm all for gay rights, but something about the whole emotional appeal of 'a young CHILD said it! Therefore the truth is quintupled!' is really cloying and insulting.

I remember back in the 70's or 80's they stopped doing the pledge in school every morning, so when did it start back anyway? Or is this state just some nutball area of the country, that still even has religion taught in schools, like they didn't get the message "liberty...for all" and never heard the anthem "land of the free"...or maybe the school system never heard about "We the people....certain unalienable right...life, liberty".

You should check out the Colbert bit he did on the matter with JD Roberts from the Canada version of MTV. Nails him pretty good there.

Not to mention it wasn't just about gay rights, but there were more things the kid mentioned that go against the last line of the pledge in America, including racism, sexism, etc.

I refused to recite the pledge of allegiance as a first grader, but I didn't make it a whole thing, I just changed the words to stuff I could agree with, like pledging to brush my teeth with tooth paste or somesuch. My improvised daily pledge varied. I got into a bit of trouble, but only as a goof-off rather than as a six year old atheist who didn't feel comfortable pledging my allegiance to a country under god.

I think part of the problem was the teachers attitude about it. While we don't see what is said, we are left to assume it was along the same lines as everything else "just shut up, stop thinking, and do are you are told". That doesn't get you very far with anyone.

Seems things may have gone different is the substitute teacher had not gotten upset and raising her voice over something so trivial.

Funny how we only hear about the boy, and not whether this substitute was firing, lost her ability to teach, or anything like that on CNN.

I remember that I refused to stand up for the pledge, much less say it pretty much all through middle and high school. Teachers genuinely yelled at me and threatened me with "write ups" for not "respecting our country."

I had to actually quote Everson v Board of Education at teachers to get them to leave me the hell alone.

How many of those 10 commandments are broken on a daily basis?

These are just the ones the US government and its officials break on a daily basis. "father and mother" ones represent the country they do not honor that brought them into their position.

Both 10 year old incidents happened in Arkansas. The pledge boy and this.

The parent should have whooped the child, or she should have called the childs father to come deal with it. He didn't find out until social services had taken his daughter in since the mother has custody.

Why wasn't the mother arrested? How did someone like that have custody over a child? Was the child having problems over the divorce?

The child already had their lives and family torn apart and dealing with it, so lets have fun and use a cattle prod on them.

Sex sells. Girls like that actor, and they made him sexy for them, and other male liking persons, and SO's get dragged to chick fliks all the time.

People are unhappy with the world, and needing mental masturbation, and movies like those give it to them where they cannot even get their anger out with real masturbation.

Also consider the writers strike a year or so back, that meant D class movies were all that studios could come up with during that time, and trying to get back into the groove with decent movies.

Edward is the male lead in a romance first, vampire second. Also, the author wanted a name that sounded older.

But, ergh, I can't stand that series. I took at a stab at reading it after hearing some of the stuff said about it, and I came up with this conclusion:

1) There are a couple of interesting characters. Edward actually is interesting, in a weird way.

2) Interesting characters do not make up for the idiocy that is the world-building and plot.

3) Interesting characters should be accompanied by other interesting characters. Bella is not interesting. She is a doormat.

4) Interesting characters do not make up for huge amounts of purple prose.

5) Bella is one dumb bitch. She's almost completely sure that Edward's a vampire. She has heard of vampires before, certainly. So why, exactly, does she go into the woods with him, alone, without telling anyone where she's going and when she'll be back, and without some protection? Based on the information I had available to me at the time, I would not have gone out there without my friends and family told to start searching if I wasn't home by five, and I'd have a stake down one sock. Just saying.
